, and rachel grady will be joining us. steve satich, ohio congressman, steve latourette, and ambassador nick burns are our guests this morning. it's thursday, december 6th, and "starting point" begins right now. >>> welcome, everybody. our starting point this morning, some major developments to tell you about in egypt, after angry protests against political moves by the president, mohamed morsi, have turned deadly. tanks, armored personnel vehicles, all stationed outside the presidential analysis cairo. not only are they guarding the palace, they're also keeping apart supporters and opponents of morsi. hundreds of his islamist supporters already taking to the streets in cairo this morning. opponents are gathering not very far away. last night the two sides clashed right outside the palace. the violence killed at least five people. hundreds of other people were injured. opponents are demanding that morsi dial back on those sweeping powers that he has granted himself. cnn's reza sayah is live for us in cairo this morning. what's the latest? >> reporter: soledad, we're getting the first signs t

. steve forbes saying fight, fight. pressure the president. then you have democrats, labor unio unions, the aarp saying we don't need to think about raising the retirement age. every time you have a short term play special interest dig in. until they erase the trust deficit, every time they do it incrementally they make it harder to do the big stuff. >> notwithstanding the problems in this conversation and notwithstanding problems from washington, there is some economic renaissance that's brewing under the surface here. we have an energy boom going on, low energy prices. we have manufacturing output increasing in this country. we have the housing boom with low interest rates to stay for a couple of yearses. is there enough that could happen that could offset what's going on in washington? can we grow our way out of this? >> we can't ignore them. if they blow it, there is nothing we can do. the risks are becoming more balanced where things like the housing recovery, consumer debt coming down are starting to offer the possibility where growth might be stronger although it could be lower.

, congressman steve israel, democrat of new york. congressman, nice to see you back here on the show. >> thanks, brooke. >> i understand you, yourself, have been reaching out to some of the house republicans on this. have you spoken to any of them? >> i have. and you're right, it is tough for a republican to break with his or her party and sign this petition to give a tax cut to 100% of all americans on the first $250,000. what's tougher, i think, is for them to go home and have to explain to people who are making $100,000, $200,000 that they're not going to get a tax break, that their taxes are going to go up $2,000 in order to protect the richest 2%. now, look, i personally believe that that $250,000 figure is too low. if you represent a high cost of living area like mine, i think it should be higher. but i'm not willing to go back to long island and explain to somebody who is making less than $250,000 that they're going to be held hostage for people making more. agree on the 250 and get to the higher number. >> the republican as you point out, the tougher task is to go back to their constitu

to the mall and went to the macy's and the food court, shot the victims now being identified as steve forsythe, 45 years old, and cindy an yule, 54 years old. the sheriff said that the shooter here identified as jacob tie he ler roberts armed himself with an ar-15 semi-automatic rifle. he had several fully loaded magazines that he was also wearing what seemed to appear a hoig-style face mask and ammo vest. the sheriff says the rifle actually jammed during the shooting spree, which could have saved some lives. he also said that there were a large number of police that quickly came to the scene and 10,000 people remember able to get out of the mall peacefully and quietly while all of this was going on. the sheriff also says they do not have a motive and do not believe that the suspect there, jacob tyler roberts, knew his very mani victims. we'll follow this story with more details, but that is the very latest. >>> republicans and democrats continue to battle over how to aavoid this fiscal cliff. many of us and many of you standing behind the president when asked who was handling the crisis bette
